As professor in Sociology, your primary workplace will be the Sociology Department at the School of Social Sciences. Sociology has been taught at Södertörn University for twenty years and is characterised by a strong and vibrant research milieu. Here, research is conducted within the following sub-fields of sociology: social movements and political sociology; social stratification (ethnicity, class, gender, etc.); sociological criminology (surveillance, violence, etc.); sociology of organisation; urban sociology; sociology of education; sociology of migration, sociology of health and illness; social welfare and the labour market.

Job description
The new professor of sociology will develop research in the subject, particularly research concerning with the countries of the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe (the post-communist countries of Europe). For a list of the countries included in these two regions, see below. Through cooperation with other subjects at the university, research centres, and other national and international research milieus, the professor will contribute to a strong multidisciplinary research environment at Södertörn University. Other duties include teaching, examination and course development at Bachelor’s and Master’s (first and second cycle) levels. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English. Duties also include administration, internationalisation and collaboration with the surrounding community. The position includes research-related tasks at 60 per cent of full-time. These are divided between subject development, which includes higher seminars and applications for external funding in partnership with other researchers, and their own research. The position requires a high level of presence and participation in collegial work. The applicant is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within the first two years of employment. The position is full-time and until further notice, starting on 1 June 2021 or as agreed.

Qualifications 
You are qualified for employment as a professor of sociology if you have demonstrated research expertise and teaching expertise. Research expertise must be within sociology and in research concerning countries of the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe. You must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 7.5 credits or have the equivalent competence. You must also have the personal skills necessary to do your job well and to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities. For this position, you must be able to teach in English.

Research expertise is demonstrated through high quality scholarly publications of significant scope in the relevant subject area, research funding obtained in competition, the initiation and leadership of research projects, research collaboration, third stream activities, contributions to the development of the subject, and through assignments as an external reviewer, external expert, editor or similar.

Teaching expertise is demonstrated through high quality teaching of considerable scope at first, second and third cycle levels, leading and participating in educational development work, published texts on teaching and learning, a self-reflective approach to students’ learning and experience and their own role as a teacher. It is also demonstrated through establishing links between research and higher education, appointment as a recognised or distinguished university teacher or the equivalent, building up and developing degree programmes, initiatives in educational cooperation, initiatives in third stream activities and the supervision of doctoral students.
