Dear colleagues of DemocracyNet,
Here is an event that may be of interest to some of you.
On the 24th of October, 4:15 to 6:00 pm (Swiss time): we organize at Geneva a round-table / debate on Democratic theory and practice: current challenges and opportunities, with:
* Prof. Claudia Landwehr (Uni Mainz)
* Prof. Michael Saward (Uni Warwick)
* Prof. John Parkinson (Uni Maastricht)
It will be on zoom as well: https://unige.zoom.us/j/68177132671
We will tackle some issues that may interest you such as:
* How are democratic theorists theorizing about democracy, with what (empirical and/or normative) presuppositions, and towards what ends (what is particularly at stake)?
* And how should we focus or reorient the efforts of democratic theorizing?
* What is the relevance, role and added-value of models of democracy (deliberative, agonistic, electoral, participatory, etc.) in democratic theorizing? (Are these necessary for democratic theorizing or would democratic theorists instead benefit of theorizing beyond or without models of democracy?)
* What are the main opportunities and shortcomings of relatively new approaches such as the pragmatist or the systemic perspectives in democratic theorizing? (What challenges do they pose for democratic theorizing? Can these approaches lead to fruitful developments?)
* What is or should be the role of context in the task of democratic theorizing?
* How can we understand "normativity" in the context of democratic theorizing? What role(s) does or should normativity have?
* How can democratic theorizing contribute to empirical applications such as: the measurement of democratic quality; the comparison of democratic systems or democratic innovations; the design of democratic innovations or structural reform?
* What are the recent and forthcoming methodological innovations that are promising for empirical research on democracy?
* What are the main challenges that democratic systems are facing currently or will face in the future? How can democratic theory help to tackle these challenges?
This kind of broad discussion with great scholars of the field could be of interest for some colleagues of yours I guess. So please do not hesitate to inform anybody that could be interested in participating.
Hoping that some of you will find interest in this event, I wish you all a very nice evening.
Victor
