Call for papers: Workshop on "Authoritarianism, Law and the Remaking of Society"

Abstract submission deadline: 16 September 2024

This workshop seeks to understand the social life of laws used by authoritarian states and leaders to change the composition of societies. Away from strongmen at the top of states, our interest is closer to the ground: We are interested in exploring the messiness and complexity of how the laws that are used to target sections of societies unfold in everyday life through targeting of community food practices, segregation and destruction of spaces, relationships and associations with different groups and organizations, infringement of speech, citizenship, and political participation. Through this workshop we seek to understand what 'authoritarian legality' is and how it is different from ordinary legality. Who are the agents of authoritarianism and how are these laws used to reconfigure societies? What is the social life of these laws and how do we understand them in the everyday social discourse? How do individuals and communities experience, engage and respond to such laws? Lastly, what are the methodological challenges of studying authoritarian legality today?

We invite fieldwork-informed submissions from different disciplines including socio-legal studies, anthropology, sociology, gender studies, human geography that explore the social life of law in authoritarian contexts. We are open to submissions in languages other than English as well.
