This course explores the fundamental principles and debates surrounding democratic theory. We start by examining the value of democracy, whether it is purely instrumental, or whether it has intrinsic value. We then discuss the relationship between democracy, equality, truth, and its political authority. Finally, in the second half of the course, we discuss non-ideal theories of democracy, namely political authority in the real world, representation, and the obligations of citizens. Students will engage with classic texts along with recent developments within debates in democratic theory.

Workshop organized in collaboration with the ZDA and the School of Education of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland PH/FHNW. The first day of the workshop will be held at the Institute of Political Science UZH with a seminar by Monika Waldis (ZDA and PH/FHNW) on the current state and challenges of civic education in the Swiss school system. On the second day of the workshop, participants will have the chance to engage directly and will get involved in the «SpielPolitik!» Schule nach Bern // Die Politiksimulation im Bundeshaus simulation game.
